Pilates vs. Yoga
In some respects Pilates conditioning is like Yoga. Both are considered mind-body type methods of movement; both emphasize deep breathing and smooth, long movements that encourage your muscles to relax and lengthen.
The differences:
The difference is that while yoga requires moving from one posture to the next without repetitions, Pilates flows through a series of movements that are more dynamic, systematic, and anatomically based. Pilates is more strength focused, building the core, while yoga is more flexibility focused.
Another difference is that while both disciplines utilize the mat, Pilates also incorporates work on the Pilates machines (reformer, chair, barrel, cadillac).
The similarities:
The similarities are that both practices enhance the development of supple, lithe, strong bodies. As both are mind-body methods, the practice of each encourages stress reduction and overall well-being. Pilates and Yoga can be modified for all types of individuals and fitness levels.
Combining Yoga and Pilates:
Both disciplines complement each other and as a result are increasingly being used together in “fusion” classes. The flexibility and balance achieved via a strong Yoga practice enhance the ability to complete the dynamic movements of Pilates whereas the core strengthening component of Pilates helps support the balance needed in Yoga poses.
To be successfully combined, it is important to have an instructor that is well-trained in both Yoga and Pilates.
